Cyborg, Ortega big winners at UFC 222

Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino completed an easy defence of her featherweight title at UFC 222 on Saturday night in Las Vegas with a crushing defeat of Yana Kunitskaya.

Cyborg had taken the bout at just three weeks notice after the main card fight fell through, but showed no rustiness as she completely overpowered her challenger to earn a TKO victory after just 3:25 of the first round.

Kunitskaya, the Invicta FC champion, looked way out of her league despite trying her best to contain the Brazilian.

Cyborg went on the attack from the bell, landing a huge overhand right as the Russian backed away before Kunitskaya caught the champion off guard with a takedown before briefly getting on top.

Justino used all her jiu-jitsu skills to fend off Kunitskaya’s ground work before the two eventually got back onto their feet.

From then it was one-way traffic as Cyborg landed some huge kicks and hammer blows against her terrified looking opponent that eventually sent the Russian down to the canvas, the challenger unable to defend herself as Justino rained down shots before referee Herb Dean stepped in to end the fight.

Asked who she wanted next, Cyborg singled out compatriot and UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

“Now, I wait for Amanda Nunes. She called me out. When you call Cyborg out, you have to handle it,” said Cyborg.

In the co-main event, Brian Ortega pulled off a surprise win against former UFC featherweight champion Frankie Edgar.

Ortega kept his perfect record intact by out-punching Edgar, the Californian landing a big elbow that stunned his opponent, before the final blow came with a huge uppercut as he became the first fighter to ever stop Edgar after 4:44 of round one.

The win looks certain to earn Ortega a shot at champion Max Holloway, who pulled out of the fight through injury.
