With Ginebra inching closer to a much-awaited return to the Finals, high-leaping forward Japeth Aguilar braces for an all-out war against sister team San Miguel in their best-of-three semifinals series.
Left as the sole legitimate big man for the Gin Kings after twin tower partner Greg Slaughter succumbed to an ACL injury, Aguilar believes nothing will be served on a silver platter for them as they face an elite Beermen squad.
“Nothing will come easy for us, expect na namin yun,” Aguilar told FOX Sports. “In this coming semis, they have the experience, they have the team, (laging) championship contender sila.”
True enough, Ginebra will face a number of odds against the Governors’ Cup title holder starting Monday.
Compared to San Miguel, who has won three of the last five championships, the crowd darlings has just returned to the Final Four after three years of absence.
The Beermen’s bench proved to be deeper too, with players like Ronald Tubid and Chris Ross ready to take over any given moment.
But the biggest problem for the Gin Kings will be the looming continued domination of San Miguel big man June Mar Fajardo, who is tipped to win his third straight MVP plum this season.
Aguilar, on his part, vows to do whatever it takes to halt Fajardo but expects his teammates to back him up.
“Team defense talaga, I’ll just bring whatever I can bring, I just play the style of game that I have,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s gonna be team defense, it’s Ginebra vs. the other team. – By Jason Mercene
