The Sixers had a 2015/16 season to forget in which they amassed a 10-72 record, and head coach Brett Brown believes that his side deserved to get first pick as they have endured a number of disappointing seasons.
“It’s good for the city of Philadelphia,” he told reporters. “The fans deserve this … In many ways I feel we have been rewarded for the city’s perseverance … It gives us the injection that we need. We believe the pieces around us give us even more hope.
“I feel this does validate the pain [the Sixers have endured with all the losing the past few seasons].”
The Lakers claimed the second pick after a franchise-worst 17-65 season, while the Celtics will consider themselves lucky to have received the third pick as they had a 48-34 record and secured the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They failed to make it past the first round though as they were beaten 4-2 by the Atlanta Hawks.
The 2016 NBA draft will be held on June 23.
