MLB wrap: Dodgers seal National League West title

The Los Angeles Dodgers secured their fourth consecutive National League West title on Sunday with a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Charlie Culberson connected with two outs in the 10th inning after Corey Seager’s homer in the ninth had tied the game at 3-3.

Boston stretched their winning streak to 11 games with a 3-2 success against the Tampa Bay Rays. Dustin Pedroia belted the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to cut the Red Sox’s magic number for the American League East crown to two.

The Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 2-1 win, and the Kansas City Royals dented Detroit’s AL wild-card hopes with a 12-9 triumph over the Tigers.

Toronto remain in pole position in the AL wild-card race courtesy of a 4-3 triumph over the New York Yankees. Edwin Encarnacion’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning proved decisive as the Blue Jays rallied to send the Yankees to a fourth straight loss.

The San Francisco Giants fell a game behind the New York Mets in the NL wild-card race following their 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, while the St Louis Cardinals‘ wild-card hopes were also hit by a 3-1 defeat to the Chicago Cubs.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and Jose Reyes had four RBI as the Mets maintained the NL wild-card lead with a 17-0 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Chicago White Sox denied the Cleveland Indians the chance to clinch the AL Central crown on home turf by winning 3-0 at Progressive Field. Carlos Rodon struck out 11 across eight scoreless innings.

Brandon Finnegan threw five scoreless innings as the Cincinnati Reds saw off the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 while Joe Musgrove tossed seven solid frames in the AL wild-card-chasing Houston Astros‘ 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Elsewhere, the Oakland Athletics avoided a sweep by beating the AL West champion Texas Rangers 7-1, the NL East champion Washington Nationals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-7 and the Seattle Mariners edged the Minnesota Twins 4-3.

The game between Miami and the Atlanta Braves was cancelled following the death of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez in a boating accident at the age of 24.
