Cubs topple Giants, Marlins sink Mets

Addison Russell hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to spur the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 win against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday evening.

The win stretched the Cubs’ advantage atop the National League Central to 15.5 games ahead of the second-placed St Louis Cardinals.

Christian Yelich drove in four runs and crushed a three-run homer as the Miami Marlins ended their season-worst five-game skid with a 6-4 triumph over the New York Mets, who slipped two games back in the hunt for a wild card.

A five-run fifth inning lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 9-6 victory over the San Diego Padres. Freddie Freeman went deep for the Braves, who secured their first three-game sweep at Turner Field this season.

And the Minnesota Twins ended their 13-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
